David Kendziara will be all decked out in tropical gear- a Hawaiian shirt, a lei, a funny hat and some Mardi Gras beads. He's one of the lucky few who scored tickets to the Jimmy Bufett concert Tuesday at the Alltel Pavilion in Raleigh.
"The concerts are pretty much a big party - a three-hour escape to the tropics," he says.
The show sold out in 54 minutes, a regular occurrence for Mr. Buffetts' beah-music extravaganzas.
"His shows can sell out within 10 minutes," says Ed Eddington, promotions director of the Shoreline Parrothead Club in Michigan. SPHC is one of more than 135 chapters of the Parrot Heads in Paradise.
Mr. Kendziara and his wife, Laura, started the Pleasure Island Parrot Heads in Kure Beach, which has seen its membership grow to more than 80 since its inception two years ago. Like most BUffett fans, he's been to more than just a show here and there. In fact, he said he's seen at least 15 of Mr. Buffetts' concerts, including the millennium celebration in Los Angeles.
Like a beach-tune version of the Grateful Dead's "Deadheads," Parrot Heads are dedicated followers who, according to Mr. Eddington, band together to help the community and support charities. They hold board meetings every month, organize parties and put together events such as Adopt a Highway.
And of course, they love Mr. BUffett. They flock to his concerts in Hawaiian-print shirts, ties, cocnut bras and grass skirts. Hardcore Parrot Heads can be found in the concert parking lots hours before the show. It's tradition to decorate yourself and your car - people will fill the beds of their trucks with sand, fake plam trees, and even swimming pools, Mr. Eddington said.
"The party before is probably just as good as the concert," Mr. Kendziara says.
The lure of Parrot Head clubs is the common bond with people who enjoy Mr. Buffett's laid-back style and summer-lovin' music. "It's nice to be around people with similar interests and Parrot Heads get along iwth other Parrot Heads," Mr. Eddington says. "I met my wife at a Parrot Head meeting."
At buffettnews.com, dedicated fans post Mr. Buffett's set lists and their personal reviews of his concerts. They also participate in top 10 lists, one of which was appropriately titled "Top 10 Signs You're a Parrot Head." Replies included: "You wear a grass skirt and coconut bras on casual Fridays," "You own a 'lost shaker of salt' but can't find it," "You drive around all year long with a fin on your car," and "You would send a wedding invitation to Jimmy Buffett in hopes he would attend."
